Does anyone know on what basis officials are appointed for the different ties .
Other than being ineligible to ref a game with a team from their own country - how does it work ?

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
We were getting into our stride at the back end of the first half and it looked like there was only one outcome until that card. They were dodgy at the back and offered virtually nothing going forward, even with the man advantage. With Benrahma playing better, we could have been in countless times on their right hand side.

UEFA really don't want us to get to the semis.

They proved to be a better team than Sevilla reserves, although we played much better at home last time around.

Lyon had far too much possession, let's hope Lanzini will break some of that up with Declan as he was worried about getting booked and missing the away leg, so will be up for next week.

Cresswells deliveries into the box will be missed.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
I have to say that if this is how European football is and if this is the quality of the refereeing then I am not sure that I want much of it.

Cramp after 20 minutes? FFS

The referee was weak and caused the game to be stop start which suited them, has he never heard of the advantage rule?

I am going to be controversial here but a local parks referee would have had a better game than that last night, all this falling over at the slightest touch is part and parcel of a contact sport. When I referee I only stop the game if I see blood or a bone sticking out someones shin.

The foul on Bowen just before their goal was a clear and obvious mistake and should have been noticed. When I referee on a Saturday I am on my own, I have 2 substitutes running the line who clearly don't want to do it and provide me with no assistance but I get on with it and give what I see but this cunt has a team of about 7/8 to help him and point out his errors.

Anyway he was a cunt and how someone who took a backhander can be even allowed to referee at this level shows you how corrupt football is.

Declan's ability to get alongside somebody and snick the ball off them, even when it doesn't look possible, is unsurpassed, I've only ever seen one player do it better...

I reckon he's a reincarnation...

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
I know I praised Dawson on a separate thread, but there were others that need praise. Antonio yet again didn't stop working for the ninety minutes, and With a bit more composure puts away that through ball rather than jump over the ball (avoid the keeper). And I know he had a quiet game attacking wise, but Declan did a great job closing down the Brazilian number 10

Pagey 11:23 Fri Apr 8 Yup, what Pagey said... we need to get out there with some swagger and plenty of talking and confidence... they only got rolling when they realised we were nervous and the ref was playing for them.

I try hard to like Benny but time after feckin time last night he had opportunity to really hurt Lyon and he made the wrong decision, or gave it away, or tied himself in knots and lost possession... Without Cressy up his arse to bail him out (or even Arfa, dare I say), he buggers about until he has two or three men on and we know the rest...

Can see us keeping it level until half time in second leg and then let’s see if can get a 1-0 win.

Their weak link is the long tailed right back who dived for a pen and then messed up for our goal. Benrahma was getting behind him all game.

Boeteng well passed his best.

Going forward thought they looked okay in the first half but can’t remember many saves Areola had to make.

I actually think Moyes would have taken a draw before the game.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
After the sending off last night, avoiding defeat was the main objective so it was a decent result in the end. I think that gives us huge belief going to their place and I think we’ll go through.

I’d put a photo in the changing room of Dembele winking and also show the little clip of Dawson with his tackles near the end, going through them all and taking no shit.

Then tell them to go out there and wipe the floor with the cheating cunts.

You can slag off lyon all you want but you can't deny that they played with gusto.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
I'm sure (hope) Moyes took note of their tactics last night. A very simplistic narrow block of four in front of the keeper, with the two fullbacks offering width, with Paqueta in behind the diver. One noticeable thing was the two wide attacking midfielders rarely worked back and helped Emerson/Gusto. The second leg, we really need to get down the side of them, as I think the two WBs are limited defensively and Boeteng is like a statue

I have just about calmed down. What fucks me off about poor referring isn't the fact someone can make a mistake it's the blind arrogance that the don't seem to believe they have (or even may have). Appalling display by the official, an official that has a checkered past too.

Driving home last night listening to Talkshite it was clear that the only person that thought it was a sending off was some bitter Spurs fan.

I am now convinced we will do them over there, by fuck they're in for a shock when they see what an away support is actually like. Those cunts turned up in a fucking milk float!

(Clearly I haven't calmed down yet).

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
It's not that I thought that Lyon were shit, but they were not as good as I thought they might be.

After a shaky start we grew into that first half and started to play well. At the end of the game, with all that went on, I am now convinced that we can get a result next week.

I am not saying we WILL get a result, but I just don't think it was as important to win tonight after seeing that this Lyon team is definitely beatable.

Their home form isn't amazing.

In their last 5 games at home they have won 2, lost 2 and drawn 1.
They are 9th in Ligue 1.

Thought we played well going down to 10 men and I am not that worried about the away leg… hopefully a stronger ref to stamp out their play acting.

Cresswell should never have touched him… always going to go down

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Lyon - Official Match Thread
I don't watch French football, but based on their league being pretty weak and Lyon down in around 8th, I can see why some say they are shit. I didn't think they looked shit, they passed it better than us, although that ain't exactly hard, but they did lack a cutting edge, mainly all huff and puff. Let's not forget they knocked Man City out the ECL just 2 years back, and comfortably too, or has that side now pretty much been disbanded?

With no away rule rule now last nights game is now null and void, it's now just a one off game over there. If we play well we must have a great chance of winning. Feeling nervous already, and as much as the league is still very important the Bees game on Sunday now seems like a distraction.

Lyon played with the sort of confidence of knowing decisions would go their way, they just had to ensure there were decisions to be made……funny that……

Lyon may well be a shit team but sure we've struggled to beat shit teams all season. Always felt this tie was going to be settled by the odd goal.
Fancy us to get a result in Lyon but for fucks sake no more talk of Barce fucking lona

Was it you that ran onto the field last night, crossed hammers? That level of neediness for attention reminded me of you.
